5 Energy-Boosting Foods

Top 5 Energizing Foods

We all have those mornings where you just can’t wake up and those afternoons where you feel like you’re are about to fall asleep no matter what you do. There are a lot of things you can do to perk you up, like take a walk or drink some water.  But the best way, in our humble opinion, is to make sure you’re fueling your body with the right foods to keep your energy up throughout the day. That’s why we put together a list of the top 5 foods that help you stay awake and alert no matter how tired you are. Get ready to feel energized!

1. Whole Grains

Whole grains are the holy grail of energy food. They have less sugar than their refined counterparts so release energy steadily throughout the day. Try munching on Right Bite’s Coconut Curry and Brown Quinoa for lunch, so you don’t get that pesky post-lunch afternoon slump.

2. Protein

When you’re opting for protein to keep you energized make sure you’re going for lean cuts (not fatty ones). Chicken and Turkey are your best lean options and will keep you fueled up for the rest of the day without making you feel heavy and lethargic. Pepper & Pine’s Asian Situation Grain Bowl is the perfect protein pick-me-up with grilled chicken and whole grains!

3. Fruits

Fruits are a great source of natural sugar. This sugar gives your body a burst of energy. We recommend starting your day with Sunny Side’s Mango & Yoghurt Chia Pot to give you the burst of energy you need to wake you up in the morning and get you through to lunch.

4. Nuts

Nut’s are a great source of energy and a great snack before and after lunch. But if you really want to up your alertness game, try out Richy’s Lusty Beetroot Salad for lunch – it’s packed not only with beetroot (which is a superfood we’ll have you know) but also full of walnuts that will keep your energy level high for the rest of the weekend.

5. Cheese

It’s well known that you shouldn’t eat too much cheese before you sleep, not only because it’s rumored to give you bad dreams but also because it keeps you awake! Aged cheeses actually contain an amino acid called tyramine which stimulates a neurotransmitter that tells your body to keep awake and alert (think fight or flight response), so try some cheese for breakfast or lunch instead to keep alert! Have you tried the Family Salad from Circle Cafe? This healthy salad topped with a plump piece of mozzarella won’t just boost your vitamin intake but also will help keep you alert!
